A new story arc starts in Green Arrow #47. Team Arrow (Connor Hawke, Arsenal, Speedy, and Green Arrow) tries to stop a bank robbery in progress and gets more than they can handle from the mechanical menace the Duke of Oil. Also, the crime lord Brick is wondering what he has to do to protect his interests from Team Arrow. They are slowing down his drug operations and Brick has to come up with a definitive plan to stop them.
Meanwhile Oliver and Arsenal have a heated and engrossing talk about Mia (aka Speedy). Arsenal questions Green Arrow’s motive for letting Mia become the new Speedy. Oliver discusses his reasoning with Arsenal. Arsenal realizes that he and the new Speedy are quite alike and agrees with Green Arrow’s decision.
The story by Judd Winick is thrilling and well-paced. Social issues from the characters' respective pasts and strong sub-plots keep the reader’s attention. The artwork by Tom Fowler (pencils) draws the characters faces distorted with emotion. But I think his style reminds me of artist James Sherman (silver age Legion of Super-Heroes), and with the inks by Randy Ramos there is a lot of detail to the characters. There is very little background work in the panels, only what is needed. When Team Arrow tries to subdue the unorthodox mechanical menace the Duke of Oil, the action and the movement in the action panels is good and shows all the chaotic events unfolding.
There are a lot of surprises in this issue, and more are in store. Working on a strong storyline and sub-plots makes this a bull’s-eye for readers who are loyal to the Green Arrow universe, and this will recruit new ones as well. But sorry, there are no more spots available for Team Arrow.
I give this comic book a 3.50 for great action and surprises along the way.
A quality read and a quality title.
