Writer Joe Casey and artist Clement Sauve introduce Infantry #1 by Devil's Due Publishing and Aftermath Comics. The story carries the reader to a deserted chemical lab deep in a secluded jungle in the South Pacific. The team of Agent Styx and Mr. Alexander are investigating what demolished the chemical lab of Futura Pharmaceuticals. Then startling answers surface as their investigation uncovers a secret operation. The cover operation was supposed to be a pharmaceutical lab, but the research team uncovers a sub-basement where they suspect genetic experimentation was taking place. And given the destruction, something is critically wrong.
Then the readers are brought to a different time and place in an urban area of Los Angeles were we are introduced to the main character of Infantry. The setting is a warehouse and a group called Nemesis is making a deal with an individual that calls himself The Marionette. Infantry interrupts negotiations. After the battle the Marionette gives Infantry some advice, almost to the point of counseling him to reconsider the alternatives on whatever quest or direction his is taking. The writer is setting up a confrontation or another meeting down the line for these two individuals maybe the readers will see this down the road in future editions of this title, that's something worth waiting for.
The artwork by Clement Sauve (colors by Blond) is genuine and keeps all the action and detail flowing. The expressions of the characters is good; readers can see facial expressions reacting with the dialogue. The action panels and spread pages are nice and flow with the story.
I really enjoyed this first edition of Infantry. It's nice to see and read about new characters. (Although at first glance there's at least some resemblance to another genetic mutant readers may be familiar with, Marvel’s Weapon X.) Infantry uses Tong-fus or police battalion clubs as his weapons of choice and the way he uses them may make the reader wonder if he was policeman or a solider. Overall, Infantry #1 has a nice re-reading factor, and the continuing saga of an origin story. Who is he? What is his purpose? Only time will tell, in the following issues of Infantry.
