The Government has raised the invulnerable Hyperion from childhood to be its very own controllable super hero. Recently, Hyperion has begun to ask himself if everything involving his service for the government is what it appears to be.
Despite the hidden agendas, Hyperion, Nighthawk and Blur join together for the first time to hunt down a serial killer who is taking out prostitutes. Blur and Nighthawk question the ladies of the night. Though the serial-killer-of-prostitutes is old hat in prime time cop shows, one difference here is that the prostitutes are not romanticized or glamorized – that is, so far, no “prostitute with a heart of gold” stereotype. Old-fashioned surveillance lets Nighthawk find the killer and he finds out that the killer is super-powered -- and may even be as powerful as Hyperion.
The storyline is good, the dialogue is real and the art is excellent. This is the first story after the second collection of issues, but is thin on subplotting. One hopes the next issue will see more of the complex plotting Stracznski did so well on Babylon 5. We see the tension among the new team members, and we see Hyperion’s handlers start to wonder whether their leash is still attached to him. The protagonists find the killer too easily, but one unanswered question remains for next issue: though the killer is super-powered, we don’t know how powerful he is.
