In a deadly fight in the Pacific Ocean, Aquaman and a special forces group called the Sea Devils battle The Marauder. The Marauder is trying to steal Navy nuclear warheads from a submerged part of San Diego, now named Sub Diego. Most of the people there have adapted to the water and are amphibious and are being held captive by The Marauder. The Marauder's attack turns deadly when he wounds and kills some of the Sea Devil’s members. Aquaman regroups the Sea Devil team and carries out the mission at hand, retrieving the warheads and saving the prisoners as well as defeating the maniacal Marauder.
Aquaman #24, written by John Ostrander, is very good. The story is laying the foundation for future writers of this book. The Sea Devils make a good addition to this series; this leaves a lot of room for character development and continued storylines. The artwork by Chris Batista and countless inkers has much action and detail in the panels. Underwater comic books are difficult because one has to create the illusion of the characters in water, and the artist and the team of inkers did just that. The colorist Naythan Eyring did a great job of shadowing the darks and bright colors penciled by the art team.
This is a good bookI like to see Aquaman in this capacity, daring and ferocious, sort of a kick-behind-ask-questions-later attitude. The new writer John Arcudi arrives next issue, and it will be interesting to see what direction and what adventures he has in store for Aquaman, the King of the Sea.
