As it states in the opening page, this character — a cross
between Jack the Ripper and Wolverine — is not to be
confused with the one from the children’s classic Alice in
Wonderland. Hatter M is a guard sworn to protect the royal family,
and Princess Alyss is missing. The Hatter is also on another quest to
retrieve and keep hold of his trademark top hat, which is a weapon and
has teleportation capabilities.
A magician named Sacrenoir is performing in underground catacombs.
He delves into the world of black magic and resurrects the dead. Not
only does the magician resurrect the dead, the dead awake with an
appetite for flesh and the audience is their first course. Sacrenoir
is given Hatter’s hat by a crony named Marcel, who found it while
walking in an alley. Hatter M retrieves his hat from the sorcerer and
makes mincemeat of the zombies. Not only does Hatter M have to
continue his quest of finding Princess Alyss, he must also watch out
for a new nemesis, Sacrenoir the sorcerer.
Ben Templesmith’s artwork is nicely drawn with dark
watercolors of copper, blue, and grey. The colors are used well to
present the foggy and misty-damp atmosphere in France. Facial
expressions abound in the characters and the flow of the story
correlates well with the art.
This is an excellent book filled with action, horror, and humor.
Frank Beddor and Liz Cavalier wrote a stunning story; Desperado
Publishing has a franchise in the making here. The creative team even
includes Greg Cook, a cartographic chronicler (map specialist) and
historian. For more information and a great introduction to this
