Column:
Imperiled Heroes

"Canned"

So much for that.

I started “Imperiled Heroes” in hopes of alerting readers to great series that they’re missing, series that are infinitely better than the top sellers each month yet somehow languishing in the low sales area. Apparently I should have started it sooner, because today (May 15, 2006) the two series I have featured so far — The Thing and Manhunter — and both of which are two of my favorite three comicbooks each month, just got cancelled by Marvel and DC.

So what comes next? Well, I’m sure as hell not doing one right now on my other favorite series, that much is certain. So all that leaves is a massive write-in campaign to save these books. It worked for Spider-Girl numerous times, and (with all due respect) it’s not half the book that these two series are, so I want everyone who reads this column to write in to Marvel and DC and tell them you want to see The Thing and Manhunter continue. I don’t honestly care whether you have read either of them or not yet, because you would enjoy them if you did, so go ahead and call for their salvation. Alert your friends, your neighbors, your retailers, your Congressmen, your communities — you can even tell people that if they let these series be cancelled then they are UnAmerican, because that seems to be the only thing that even stirs these clowns up today.

I also want to send out a special thanks to the following people: Marc Andreyko, Dan Slott, Javier Pina, Andrea DiVito, Kieron Dwyer, and Jesus Saiz — Thank you all for creating the types of series that make comicbooks worth reading. I wish there was something more I could do than this pitiful cry for help, and that I could have gotten this column off the ground sooner and perhaps made more of a difference.

So go fire off a few e-mails right now. You have no excuse not to, because I’m even going to provide you with the e-mail addresses:

Let these publishers know that there is an audience for books that feature superb storytelling, amazing art, and creative characters. Let them know there are readers that actually read the books they buy and that mega-crossover tie-ins are not the way to earn the respect of those actual readers. Finally, show you have some taste, rise up, and make your voice be heard. Most importantly, GO BUY THESE BOOKS right now and vote with your money! That’s the only thing these corporations understand.

And go do it NOW.

And I am still doing the Manhunter TPB giveaway, so e-mail me right now for a chance to win at:
