ComicCritique.Com at SPX 2006

This past weekend ComicCritique.Com had our first “gig” when we staffed our very own table at SPX 2006. Those CCdCers who were able to attend agree it was a great success for us, and a genuine pleasure to be among so many artists and writers and fans of the medium. The single considerable disappointment for me was that a special print edition of ComicCritique.Com was not printed in time for the event. (That edition will eventually be available as a downloadable PDF.) One of the maxims I live by is “Everything Serves,” and I expect the print edition, although not completed when I’d hoped, will still serve as a great tool for us. Even without the physical example of what we do, nearly everyone who stopped by picked up the printed version of our Writer’s Guidelines and surfed our reviews a little on the WiFi-connected laptops we had on display.

Perhaps most gratifying was meeting and chatting with those who stopped by the ComicCritique.Com table to say hello and see what we were about. I especially remember one young man who stopped by early Friday afternoon and returned later that evening nearly bursting with excitement. Recognizing him from earlier I said hello and in response he blurted, “Scott McCloud just signed my copy of Understanding Comics!” We all threw our arms in the air to share a “Woo Hoo!” with him. His excitement was infectious and really drove home the importance of events like SPX and the role they serve in allowing fans to connect with one another and with the creators they admire.

Over the next day or three we’ll be posting some mp3 interviews we recorded live from the floor of the expo. Check back and have a listen; you'll get to meet just a few of the very interesting exhibitors and learn about their creations. Also, over the next several days we'll be posting reviews of some of the excellent independent comics we encountered, so keep checking back for updates.
